10 things to do that won't break the bank
by Margaret Johnson, May 4, 2007 Tribune Media Service

A vacation in the south of France is not only for rock stars, millionaires, movie moguls, or royals — it just seems that way...the most economical approach would be to rent a house and a car rather than a villa and a yacht and spend each day exploring the region....European Escapes has 4,000 properties in its portfolio in destinations such as Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, and Greece...and you can phone the company for descriptions or visit

The New York Times

Rome, like most other major European cities, has a wide range of apartments for rent, an option that many visitors staying for more than a few days find more appealing, and practical, than a hotel room...most require a minimum stay...with European Escapes, in California, you search not by area but by apartment size. A one-bedroom in Trastevere, with a double sofa bed in the living room, fireplace, TV and washing machine, was listed at $1,200 to $1,300 a week, depending on the season.

Tourists can rent a flat and live like a Parisian

Paris, France (CNN) --"Imagine waking up in your own Parisian penthouse and looking out the window to see the golden dome of Hotel des Invalides gleaming in the morning sun. Or rising to the sounds of busy Paris streets as the booksellers open their stalls on the banks of the Seine, and you head for your own kitchen in your 17th-century apartment. For the adventurous traveler, renting a flat can be the key to transforming from visitor to local.

'You are not a tourist when you stay in an apartment,' said Gourmet magazine travel editor Bill Sertl, who rents apartments when he travels to London and Paris.
'You feel different, and that's something that you can't buy. That's just a wonderful thing to take home with you.'

The Global Edition of The New York Times

"How to Find a Great Summer Villa On-Line: Start Now

WHERE will you be in August? The answer may be on your computer. The Internet is chockablock right now with summer rentals, from castles on private islands to caravans. But log on soon; pickings will be slim in a month. Visiting villas and other vacation homes on-line is the next best thing to checking them out in person. Many sites provide more choice than rental brochures and more information on each property. The pictures are often better, too, enabling a prospective tenant to ''tour'' a villa from home or office.

European Escapes ( is a good bet. Their site lists more than 4,000 properties, ranging from $500 a week to $25,000. Rentals sell out so early that the site is now featuring selected specials, from budget options up to and including the Villa de Valle in the French Luberon, a five-bedroom house that costs $13,000."

Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel, Nov. 1999

" company has truly impressed us, both for the quality of their villas as well as the reasonableness of their rates. We're talking about European Escapes, a long established firm that currently represents over 1000 properties all across Europe. A good number are in the budget range, some starting as low as $22. per person, per night.

Other goodies? This agency rents more properties in Greece than any other American agency (the owner is of Greek descent), so the rates for this region, including some of the pricier Greek Isles, tend to be excellent. In Italy, the company can book everything from apartments in Rome and Venice (starting at just $35 per person per day) to villas in Tuscany, Umbria and the Amalfi Coast. Also available are properties in Portugal, England, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland and the Czech Republic.

"Europe's Alpine valleys are peppered with picturesque ski chalets for rent. Like ski condos in the United States, chalets offer skiers many of the comforts of home: a kitchen, a living room and multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. Some are large enough for friends or several families to share and divvy up costs. And some even offer the ultimate in luxury: maid service, private ski guides and personal chefs. But booking an overseas chalet can be trying--especially if you don't speak the language. For this reason, it's best to book through a reputable stateside rental agency and
stateside skiers can easily book a dreamy European ski chalet by contacting the experts at European Escapes, which boasts a fine selection of Alpine ski chalets and the expertise and experience to help you choose the right one."

The Travel Agent Press,

"Travelers today have a much stronger desire to more fully 'discover' their destinations. One result of this knowledgeable, discriminating traveler is that the field of vacation villa and apartment rentals has experienced tremendous growth of late. Travelers get to enjoy the comforts of home while abroad, soak up the rhythm of the life of the locals, and reap the cost-saving benefits of having more space for less money than a hotel, as well as a fully-equipped kitchen to prepare meals. There are a number of reasons why the vacation villa rental option is advantageous to the traveler. The most reputable agencies, such as European Escapes, provide guidance and insight and often many extras including color pictures, directions, maps, restaurant referrals, travel guides, travel insurance, and more. In the recent past Conde Nast, Frommer's, and many other travel industry leaders have covered the increasingly popular villa rental travel option and more than ever it pays off to deal with experienced specialists such as those at

Some grateful words from our clients:

•Just had to let you know what a wonderful vacation we had. The villa was spectacular & the owner of the villa was very accommodating. We had a wonderful time.

•We just returned from our European holiday and Villa Daratso. We have never been more pleasantly surprised to arrive at a vacation villa as we were in Crete. We were warmly greeted by the villa's owners at the airport. In addition to treating us to a wonderful dinner in a near-by neighborhood restaurant, we came home to find a fully stocked refrigerator with all the basics for snacks and breakfast for the entire group. Aside from the beautiful property, the highlight of our trip was the day sailing trip that you and they arranged for us....we have sailed in many places throughout the world and it was truly a special day that was not rivaled by any other trip we have taken! We sincerely appreciate your time and effort!

•We loved Villa Fleuri, - the location in St. Rafael was not good for the Cannes festival, but otherwise we loved the town and the house was perfect.
Everyone loved it.

•We had an absolutely wonderful holiday at Villa Sambuco, the villa was perfect, it far exceeded our expectations and was so well equipped (possibly a faster coffee machine was all it lacked!) There was ample space for all 16 of us and the location was great, the owner was very helpful and sorted any problems straight away, 10 out of 10.

We had a fantastic holiday, the villa was lovely – the pictures on the website did not do it justice! There was so much space, especially around the pool and they had put a gate up at the entrance to the pool area so it was totally safe for toddlers. Also the owner & his wife were great and very responsive – eg, when the air – con wasn’t working, they came round to fix it straight away etc. Really a great experience. Thanks so much for your help.

•Tuscany, Italy - We wanted show and tell but with a twist - cooking lessons from a local cook right in our own Italian villa. The dream became possible and communal when we and 10 friends decided to rent a luxurious six-bedroom vacation home for a week in the Tuscan Chianti hills in late summer, still high season, still expensive, but now shared ($5,100 for the week, split among us). All around us were the "stupendous views of the Tuscan countryside," described on the Web site of the rental company, European Escapes. Boston Herald.

We have just returned from our trip to Italy and the Boschetti property was fantastic! The pictures on your site don't do it justice, actually. The owner met us at the property and was very accommodating, the housekeeper was very nice (and, by the way, you can arrange to have her cook dinners for you on Tuesday and Thursday). Thank you again for a wonderful holiday!

•We got back from Greece last week and had a wonderful time at Villa Petros. The villa is much larger and nicer than the photos show. It was a real luxury to stay there. Lefteris and his wife were outstanding and extremely helpful and kind. The beach was great and we had it virtually to ourselves. The Greek people are wonderful. Karystos is a very local fishing port and it was nice to get away from the tourist areas. The villa was a wonderful respite - Thanks for organising it. I will check out European Escapes next summer for our travels.

•Dear European Escapes,
There were about ten of us global travel journalists sitting in a bar in Melbourne when I raised the question of where everyone was going to be spending New Year's Eve 2000. I suggested Andalucia, Spain and suddenly we had the makings of the world's best Millenium Ball. The only question was: where were we all going to stay?

Fortunately I found you at European Escapes and all the rest of it just fell beautifully into place. You booked us an entire VILLAGE where 40 of us will be spending a week telling 'war stories' from Kilimanjaro to Kathmandu and partying like it's 1999!
Casas de Castillejos is a slice of Andalucian perfection. And when the gypsies come to sing and dance with us on New Year's Eve, we'll raise a toast in gratitude to you for making this dream come true. Thank you for your brilliant work in fitting the perfect property to the eccentric needs of this mad bunch of people.
With fond regards,

Just wanted to drop you a note about our recent trip to Italy. The accommodations at the villa were excellent. We had a great time there with the kids and the rest of our family. The place is better than advertised, very spacious, well equipped and maintained. Three of the bedrooms had queen size beds! The owners were pleasant and honest. Grandmon came every night to feed the dogs and the chickens and to water the beautiful flowers. This property is a true gem. Thanks for your help in making this a thoroughly enjoyable trip!

The Renato Apartment
was so wonderful. I couldn't wait to tell you how perfectly everything worked out and how totally ideal the apartment was. The pictures really don't do it justice as you really can't see how spacious it is. It is very modern in design and feel and was very pleasing to my architect husband. We had beautiful weather so the outside terrace was such a bonus. We spent a lot of time out there just savoring the warmth and the rooftops of Venice.

We had a wonderful time in Venice, and the Apartment Renato was everything that we hoped it would be. The owner is an excellent host. He met our party as promised and immediately made us feel right at home. The apartment was very clean, spacious and has a modern kitchen with all the necessary appliances. With the three bedrooms and extra living space we had plenty of room for our party of six adults. It is superbly located in the city. We were delighted with all of the arrangements. Our overall experience with your company and with this apartment was outstanding. We look forward to our next visit to what I believe is the most unusual and interesting city in the world. It was a pleasure doing business with you.
